This blog is in honour of my Nana and back in July I was really happy to share my first recipe of her’s, Nana’s Date Squares. When I eat at restaurants, bakeries, friends, or even other members of my family’s, I always love to see people serving their family recipes. I feel that it’s a great way of keeping our loved ones with us, and brings out a sense of pride about oneself and the dish. This recipe comes from my family friend Sharon’s mother and it’s delicious, hope you enjoy! Continue reading

Auntie Pedie’s Peanut Cookies
My great-aunt Pedie is my Nana’s sister and a great baker. I call her Auntie Pedie because I grew up with my mother calling her that, so that’s what I called her and it stuck. Recently, my mom had a craving for a specific peanut cookie and knew it was homemade but couldn’t figure out who made it or what the recipe was. It finally hit her that she had had them as a kid and they were made by my great-aunt, who she called right away to ask for the recipe. After my aunt found the right box that had the recipe (she has 16 boxes of filed recipes!), she called my mom back and we made them. Here’s the result and hope you enjoy! Continue reading
Wonderful Werther’s Caramel Cookies
My Papa (grandfather) was given a package of Werther’s Original Hard Candies as a gift from his neighbour, but he gave them to me because it was his wife, my Nana, who loved the decadent candies – a taste she passed on to my mother, who has in turn (fortunately, and unfortunately) passed on to me. Since I had this big package, I decided to get creative Continue reading
Enticing Cauliflower with Mustard-Lemon Butter
I’m always open to trying new foods, and my ever-present curiosity often results in interesting ‘I do not like this’ faces. Recently, my mom made a cauliflower side dish and the dressing smelt so good that I decided to brave the strange vegetable again…and I liked it! While my feelings towards the undressed version of the colourless cousin of broccoli haven’t changed, Continue reading
Official Delightful Nanaimo Bars
There are many phrases I like to live by, ‘Do it right’ is one of them. So when I decided to make Nanaimo bars, I searched and found the official recipe from Nanimo, British Columbia. It’s an easy, no-bake recipe, and since the first time I made them, they have been a favourite chocolate craving of my mother’s and mine. Continue reading
Melting Chocolate Chip Meringues
These meringues are a light, sweet, chocolately escape. They are simple to make, melt in your mouth, and are a great dessert or snack. My mom makes these every year for Passover, but I eat them all year round. Enjoy! Continue reading
Perfect Chocolate Pecan Pie
I must preface with acknowledging that I did not make this (yet). My mom made this delicious pie for dessert and I knew that I couldn’t wait until I made it myself to share it, because it’s that good. I am not a pie person, but pecan pie is one of the types I do eat. So take that pie and add chocolate, my favourite ingredient, and I am there with a fork! Continue reading
Hearty Les Halles-Style French Onion Soup
Every year I do a cooking class with my mom as a present for Mother’s Day, and, if you want to copy my idea, I would definitely recommend it because it’s a lot of fun, a great bonding experience, and you learn how to make new things! We normally do it around the actual holiday, but her favourite soup is French Onion Soup, which is a winter dish, Continue reading
Hone your chops: A chef’s guide to knifes
I saw this online and thought I should share it. I’m on a constant quest for knowledge and love to learn, so, since I’ve been baking and cooking since I was in diapers, food-related information is a large part of this thirst. This trait is definitely familial, as my mom and I are looking into taking a knife skills class together, so this post is quite appropriate. Hope you find at least one thing to take away from it!
